Two weeks ago, MECS and key stakeholders gathered at the Residence of the British High Commissioner in Dar es Salaam to celebrate the achievements of Phase 1 of the UK-funded eCooking Scale and Support Programme in Tanzania.

The event also marked the launch of Phase 2, which will build on the successes of the first phase by strengthening existing partnerships, fostering new collaborations, and expanding into additional focus areas such as integrating clean cooking into the health sector and reviewing the capacity for local manufacturing.

The event was the perfect opportunity to share the programme’s real-world impact and achievements to date, recognise the contributions of partners, and celebrate Tanzania’s progress to embrace eCooking.

We invite you to watch the videos showcasing the achievements of the programme and the invaluable contributions of our partners:

MECS, FixChap

In this video we hear from Prince Tillya, the managing director of FixChap. FixChap is a Tanzanian startup dealing with home service solutions, especially repair and maintenance services. eCooking Repair and Maintenance activities were started in 2024, developing an app for fundis along with the development and roll out of eCooking training for technicians (fundis). The activity trained 460 fundis, 30% of which were women, and capacitated 6 vocational training centres with the equipment to run the course. They will continue this work in 2026 to train more fundis, establish a supply chain for quality spare parts, and set up service centres as hubs for repair services, spare parts distributions, and sales of second life appliances.

MECS, WFP, SEforALL

In this video we hear from Geoffrey Ndegwa Energy for Food Security Advisor at the World Food Programme, Tanzania Country Office. Funded through MECS and in partnership with SEforALL, they worked to transition Government schools currently cooking using firewood and charcoal, to cook with Electric Pressure Cookers. To date, 36 schools in four regions have been refurbished and appliances are under deployment.

MECS, TANESCO

In Dar es Salaam, the utility TANESCO are leading the way on innovative payment models for a clean cooking transition to electric cooking. Supported by the UK through MECS Programme, TANESCO are the first utility on the continent to pilot an on-bill repayment scheme for eCooking appliances. This scheme allows customers to pay for the cost of an eCooking appliance through the pre-paid electricity bill over six months, alleviating the barrier of the upfront cost of the appliance. In phase two, TANESCO will review their smart metering capacity to help inform uptake of eCooking and support consistent energy supply.
