eCooking Roadmap launched by The Government of Malawi to foster an accelerated transition from cooking with biomass to eCooking

The Government of Malawi launched the Malawi eCooking Roadmap in Lilongwe on 6 March 2024.  The document, developed in collaboration between the Government of Malawi, the UK Aid (FCDO) funded Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS) programme, Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) and a cross-cutting group of key energy sector stakeholders, outlines a roadmap to foster an accelerated transition from unsustainably harvested biomass to electric cooking (eCooking) in Malawi.

The Roadmap has been developed as the first step in a journey specifically focussing on eCooking, laying the foundation for the development of future clean cooking strategies and key steps to aid in Malawi’s clean cooking transition. This will be achieved through supply-side (Pillar 1) and demand-side (Pillar 2) interventions, coupled with enhancing the enabling environment (Pillar 3) for increasing adoption of eCooking. The Roadmap builds on strong moves towards clean cooking such as Malawi’s SDG7 Cleaner Cooking Energy Compact & The Malawi Integrated Energy Planning (IEP) Tool. The National Cookstove Steering Committee (NCSC), comprised of government actors, development partners, implementing partners, the private sector, civil society, and academia and chaired by the Ministry of Energy, will advocate to grow the cleaner cooking sector in line with the country’s policies and vision. One of the committee’s sub-groups will focus on eCooking, to be led by Energising Development (EnDev) and feed into the Global electric Cooking Coalition (GeCCo).
