MECS is looking for provision of services to manage a Schools Trust Fund to support eCooking transition

Date
7th May 2026

With thousands of schools in Tanzania needing to transition from biomass to electric cooking, a sustainable and scalable approach is needed. Transitioning a school often means more than just buying new eCooking appliances. Actions typically include kitchen renovations, electrical upgrades (both internal and external – e.g. grid side conversion from single to three phase), appliance purchase, training of cooks. Experience from pilots across East Africa has shown a high level of willingness for schools to make the transition, but many lack access to appropriate financing to meet the CAPEX costs required.

The objective of the assignment described in this tender documentation is to establish a ‘School Trust Fund’ (STF) to provide capex loans which can be blended with other grant-based support to schools to enable them to transition to electric cooking. Appliances using other fuel types (e.g. biogas, improved charcoal, green charcoal, briquettes etc) are not eligible to use the proposed Trust Fund facility.
