The Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS) programme, funded by UK Aid (FCDO), and Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) are co-organising a clean cooking themed session at COP27, as part of a full agenda of events taking place in the Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7) Pavilion which is hosted by SEforALL with the support of the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) and other sponsors. As global leaders gather for the 27th Conference of the Parties in Sharm el-Sheikh, recently released United Nations reports show that ‘time is running out’ for averting the worst impacts of the climate crisis, and reinforce the overwhelming scientific consensus that urgent, collaborative action on drastically reducing global greenhouse gas emissions is required to avoid irreversible climate disaster. This session will highlight clean cooking, especially energy-efficient electric cooking devices, as a critical climate solution, and urges countries to take up the twin opportunity of incorporating clean cooking into integrated energy planning to realise multiple wins for climate, environment, health, gender, and livelihoods.

The session ‘The Twin Opportunity: Electricity Spurring a Clean e-Cooking Transition’, to be held on Saturday 12th November 2022 from 10.30-13:00 EET, will bring together utilities, high-level government representatives, development banks and philanthropies to discuss how a pivot to e-Cooking (cooking with electricity) can leverage the investments made in infrastructure improvements to rapidly expand levels of cooking with electricity. This session will also highlight the urgent need to decarbonise and mitigate the devastating consequences of the climate crisis and how e-Cooking can be integrated into emerging processes of integrated energy planning.

The session agenda is as follows:

  • Introduction by moderator (3 min)
  • Panel Discussion (40 min)
  • Audience Q&A (15 min)
  • Closing remarks (2 min)

This session is open for participation from all, and is particularly relevant to:

  • Finance organizations (public and private) interested in the prospects for eCooking investment,
  • Policymakers interested in mechanisms that can increase demand for electricity as well as those interested in what mix of cooking fuels and technologies can deliver the greatest co-benefits;
  • Private sector stakeholders looking to secure carbon finance for eCooking enterprises,
  • Researchers interested in the climate impacts of expanding clean cooking access;
  • Mini-grid operators and national utilities looking to stimulate demand and hence consumption per customer.

We invite you to join in the discussions to take place during the session. Register to participate virtually in this event and all other events taking place in the SDG7 Pavilion:
