By Will Clements (Gamos Ltd.).

A workshop led by Simon Batchelor (Gamos Ltd. / Loughborough University), with input from Will Clements (Gamos Ltd.), was conducted at GOGLA’s Unlocking Solar Capital event in June 2023 in Kampala, bringing together the key players in the Ugandan eCooking sector including ERA, MEMD, Umeme, CREEC, BURN and PowerUP. Will Clements presented the MECS jigsaw concept to provide a framework for the discussion. Each panel member spoke passionately about their hopes for eCooking in Uganda. Peter Mwesiga of Umeme signalled his intention that the pilot project will stimulate demand which will allow the private sector to scale up more easily.

Simon led an interactive activity in which attendees stood at certain places in the room according to how much they agreed or disagreed with statements he made about the feasibility of mini-grid and off-grid eCooking, enabling a lively debate. The workshop was well received and attended by government ministers. MECS were able to show how the Ugandan jigsaw is coming together, with the supply chain the missing piece, and in collaboration with CREEC explain the convenience and cost effectiveness of eCooking, and how mini-grid and off-grid eCooking are following a similar trajectory to viability.
