MECS, funded by UK International Development, is implementing the Tanzania eCooking Scale and Support Programme (2024-2026), which includes Workstream 5 on Quality and Standards in collaboration with the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS). Under this workstream, new Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) have been developed for Electric Pressure Cookers, Induction Hobs, and Rice Cookers, alongside a safety standard for Air Fryers. A customer labelling scheme has also been introduced to help consumers access high-quality, energy-efficient appliances.
These draft standards are now open for public consultation. Stakeholders are invited to review the documents and submit comments within the two-month consultation window, in line with the WTO Agreement on standards development. To access the drafts, visit the TBS public comment portal and look for the letter titled Stakeholders’ Comments Letter NOVEMBER 2025 . All relevant drafts are listed under codes beginning with EDC 7 (XXXX) DTZS. There is a Form for Stakeholders’ Comments – Electrotechnical – November 2025, where comments can be added and submitted to TBS.
