MECS historical household data

Explore the household studies and cooking data collected through MECS over many years. The tool brings together records from separate partners, countries and studies so users can look back at baseline cooking practices and investigate the impacts of household cooking transitions.

The tool is designed for researchers, analysts and programme teams looking for data to support new analysis. Users can filter and select records across countries, years, locations and household circumstances, including economic groups, to find comparisons and patterns relevant to their questions.

The archive includes varying levels of data on dishes, fuel use, cooking devices, cooking duration, time spent preparing to cook, etc. It must be noted that comparisons must take account of differences in study methods, time of data gathering, and the information available for each dataset.

The key outputs include:

  • comparisons of fuel use, cooking and preparation time;
  • patterns across selected household groups and studies;
  • datasets filtered by target parameters and requirements;
  • evidence of changes associated with cooking transitions.
