School cooking transition model

Model the impacts of school cooking transitions (for menus, devices and fuels) from existing school behaviour to proposed transition behaviour. Estimates are built around real cooking data from the Schools Kitchen and Cooking Study (SKACS), with the model enabling exploration of anything from a single device upgrade at one school to a transition programme covering a full set of schools across a region or country.

This model is designed for programme managers, education ministries, institutional cooking planners and project developers. Users can expand the database, define new fuel relationships, and create cooking profiles or relationships to explore options suited to different school kitchens, or simply use the default SKACS-informed parameter library.

Future versions may adapt the model to show basic school nutrition information, enabling menu analysis to produce understanding for cost and emissions under nutrition targets. This addition will depend on interest.

The key outputs include:

  • baseline and transition carbon emissions;
  • financial implications for individual schools;
  • comparisons of alternative school cooking options.
