PEEDA launches repair manuals and modules for EPCs and induction stoves to develop urgently needed local after sales services in Nepal

Date
5th June 2024

People, Energy, and Environment Development Association (PEEDA) has compiled comprehensive repair manuals and repair training modules to assist repair technicians and practitioners in troubleshooting and fixing common issues with Electric Pressure Cookers and Induction Stoves. The manuals (below) were developed by drawing on the findings of the UKAid funded MECS-PEEDA study into common repair issues affecting eCooking appliances and provide step-by-step instructions for diagnosing issues and repairing EPCs & induction stoves. Safety and storage, tools, dismantling appliances, component testing, end of life and eWaste considerations are also covered in the manuals.

These comprehensive repair manuals and modules were designed to help develop local after sales services and have been successfully used to train repair technicians in Mahankal Rural Municipality (see video below). Furthermore, the repair manuals have major benefits for the institutionalization of repair and maintenance within organizations working in the field of eCooking both in Nepal and beyond. The following points demonstrate significant steps towards mainstreaming the study’s findings and outputs, which have already begun to take place.

  • The apex body for vocational training in Nepal, the Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT) stated they are willing to integrate the induction stove and EPC repair module and manual into their training module on home appliance repair and maintenance.
  • The Government of Nepal’s nodal agency for clean cooking, the Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC) stated they are willing to make the module and manual a key component of the provision of the aftersales service in their future interventions including the GCF-funded eCooking project targeting 500,000 households. Commenting at the stakeholder consultation workshop for the study, Dr Rana Bahadur Thapa, Assistant Director of AEPC, highlighted the importance of the repair manuals and modules and their wider adoption by stakeholders in the sector.

The below video highlights the development of the research and the successful training workshop on eCooking appliance repair in Mahankal Rural Municipality, which used the repair manuals and modules developed by this study.
